Horseboxes need to be kept in optimal condition not only for the wellbeing of all horses but also to keep it roadworthy. The floors and walls are vulnerable to damage, which if left unchecked could seriously injure your horse. Many floors are made from plywood with rubber matting on top or aluminium planking, with the former especially prone to rot.
Another hot spot is the wooden ramp, with the springs needing regular checking and the ceiling needs monitoring for leaks. Often the underside can start to corrode or rust, which can lead to costly structural damage.
There are three types of horseboxes: rear-facing, forward-facing and herringbone, with a large range in size from 3.5T for two horses to larger ones for 10-horse ones. Generally speaking, horseboxes are preferred to trailers for professional riders and many in the industry believe the extra space suits horses, alongside the smoother suspension. However, others prefer the overall more cost-effective initial investment and general running costs of trailers.
