May Half-term superhero fun on the farm

If you’re looking for some fun, local activities for the children or grandchildren during May half-term week (Sat 27th May-Sunday 4th June): look no further than Rutland Farm Park in Oakham, Rutland.

Visitors are being encouraged to dress as their favourite superheroes (with or without wellies!) and will receive a complimentary bag of animal feed. There will be a fun superhero picture hunt all week, to keep the children entertained as they walk round.

On Bank Holiday Monday (29th May), there will be some live superheroes visiting the farm.

You might spot your favourite superheroes!

The farm staff are looking forward to seeing all your amazing costumes: from Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Captain America, Incredible Hulk, Thor, Doctor Strange, Ironman, Captain Marvel, Black Widow, Wonder Woman, Wanda (Scarlet Witch), to Cat Woman: everyone is welcome and booking is available online through the website.

Rutland Farm Park is a small 18-acre Victorian working farm in the beautiful market town of Oakham, Rutland – England’s smallest county.

It is open all year round for you and your family to explore and meet the wonderful and friendly animals. It is easily accessible from the surrounding counties of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and from across Rutland.

The team on the farm have been enjoying the arrival of spring and have encouraged local and migrating birds to take nesting material for the bird feeders. These include straw, hay and alpaca wool: perfect for cosy nest-building. What birds might you see? Keep an eye out for goldfinches, blackbirds, greenfinches and chaffinches. Take some photos and tag the team on our Twitter and Facebook pages, they’d love to see them.

The farm park was opened in 1979 by John and Daphne Ball who were both originally teachers in Kenya, where John prepared educational materials for broadcasted lessons over the radio.

They returned to the UK in 1974 to run the family beef farm, but as experienced teachers they wanted to establish an educational farm for visitors to learn about farming and animals, focusing on rare native breeds of livestock.

Rutland Farm Park has a wonderful range of animals from: white peahens, geese, chickens and ducks, fun-loving goats who love a cheeky snack from visitors, a wide range of pig breeds, guinea pigs, alpacas, llamas, cows and sheep and of course: John and Daphne the donkeys, and Lady Bridie and Bear, the horses.

Children can enjoy cuddle time with the guinea pigs, as well as feeding the alpacas, llamas, cows and sheep.

For families interested in adopting guinea pigs, please contact the farm staff. They make wonderful family pets and are incredibly soft for cuddling!

Rutland Farm Park provides a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with nature and animals: fostering a lifelong learn of nature for children. The tactile feeling from hugging or feeding animals, has proven mental health benefits for children, parents and grandparents alike.

There are educational, seasonal workshops throughout the year from: Christmas wreath-making, spinning wool and the team are more than happy to accommodate school visits, team-building sessions for businesses to birthday parties.

Throughout Father’s Day weekend this year, (Sat 17th and Sunday 18th June), there is free entry for each paying guest, so treat your father this year?

Why not sample the delicious range of hot and cold refreshments in Daphne’s Tea room? All the tasty cakes are homemade, including a selection of gluten-range treats.

If you’re looking to treat someone special in your life, afternoon teas can be prebooked throughout the year.

Rutland Farm Park is proud to offer good old-fashioned friendly fun – as a small family-run business, the owners are always happy to welcome families with small children. There are ample toilets and baby changing facilities throughout the site. There is also free, convenient parking for all motorists.

Children love to run free, and after a hard morning’s work feeding the animals, they can enjoy relax in the outdoor play areas and picnic benches throughout the site.

The farm is a proud, British working farm: giving visitors an authentic farm feeling, rather than a garish theme-park vibe. The commercial sheep and cattle are raised off-site and the hay is generated from the surrounding pastureland.

The farm history spans back several generations, with the fourth and fifth generation proudly running the farm today.

Visitors can sponsor animals on the farm and are welcome to browse and purchase from the gift shop on site, offering a wide range of toys and gifts.

Check the Facebook and Twitter for more events throughout the year.
