Newton Abbot is striking the right note this October with a very special evening of music in an unexpected setting. On Monday 13th October, award-winning Devonian folk singer Jim Causley will perform his acclaimed show Songs of Devon inside the atmospheric Newton Abbot Museum, as part of the new Music in the Museum series organised by Newton Abbot Town Council.
Causley is far more than a traditional folk singer. With six BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominations under his belt, including the coveted Singer of the Year, his warm voice, deep knowledge of local heritage, and entertaining stage presence have made him a leading figure in the UK’s folk scene. Since his 2005 debut, he has become a celebrated ambassador for the songs and stories of the South West.
For Newton Abbot Town Council, this is part of a bold new venture to bring live music right to the heart of the town. Events organiser Natalie Hicks explains:
“We want to make Newton’s Place, home of the museum, a cultural hub. After launching with a sell-out shanty show earlier this year, we’re thrilled to welcome one of the country’s foremost folk musicians to share songs steeped in Devon’s past.”
The venue itself adds another layer of magic. Housed in a beautifully restored Victorian church, the museum’s rich acoustics and historic displays create the perfect backdrop for tales of old Devon. Museum curator Charlotte Dixon agrees:
“What better place to enjoy stories of our county’s colourful past than within walls filled with its history?”
Don’t miss this unique blend of music, heritage, and atmosphere. Tickets are £10 and available online at TicketTailor or from the museum.
