In this issue of Community Update, we are delighted to welcome The Eight Bells with our Commitment to Excellence Award.
The Eight Bells is a traditional pub, just off the beaten track near St Dunstan’s Church in Canterbury. Frequently listed in the CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, it is a local’s favourite and renowned for its homemade Sunday Roast Dinner.
Landlord Kim gives a warm and friendly welcome to all customers and the pub has an excellent 4.5 rating on Tripadvisor.
This cosy, homely traditional pub dates back to 1708 and when rebuilt in 1902, kept many of the original features such as the embossed windows and the original outside toilets.
The walled garden is busy in summer and the pub quiz on the third Wednesday of the month is popular with locals. Trophies adorn the display cabinet from the weekly four darts teams and the signature Sunday Roast is famous throughout Canterbury, with high online customer praise,
“Having popped in to the Eight Bells on many occasions for a beer or two, we’ve recently discovered The Sunday Lunch. Have enjoyed this twice now – this is good old-fashioned cooking at it’s very best. At a great price. Food is served by Al very quickly, is piping hot and generously portioned. Choice of chicken, beef, lamb or pork, all served with mash & roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and five other veg. And gravy to die for!!! A mention also to Colin & Sam who pull a great pint. Wonderful value for money and nice homely atmosphere.”
“Kim, the landlady, is simply a lovely, lovely lady. Her partner in crime, Al, is equally as lovely. They keep a perfect pint and a perfect atmosphere. If you’re in Canterbury; here you must drink!”
“Landlady Kim and staff give all a warm welcome and the drinks are good too. The weekends can be really busy, so it’s a good idea to try the weekdays too. The customers are mostly local people and friendly too. Food is a traditional Sunday roast that is highly regarded. Like many pubs it suffered under Lockdown, so go along and visit it. It remains my favourite pub in Canterbury. You won’t regret giving it a try.”
