The Creative Heart of Lancaster

The Dukes is a theatre based in Lancaster, England and its mission is to bring the best in live performance and cinema to the communities of Lancashire and actively support opportunities for communities, individuals and artists to develop their own creative work and its delivery.

The historic venue is the only producing theatre in the Lancashire area as well as the oldest cinema in the city, operating since 1971. It is dedicated to a diverse range of high quality programming and telling stories that are relevant, fun, heartwarming and electrifying, whether that’s on stage or screen.

Its packed programme culminates in the theatre’s much anticipated Christmas show coming later this year. The Snow Queen runs from 21st Nov – 31st Dec and tells the tale of Kai, a young boy who is whisked away to the icy realm of the mysterious Snow Queen. His best friend Gerda sets out on a daring adventure to rescue him and discovers that the true power to overcome darkness lies in bravery, friendship and the warmth of the human heart.

More than simply a venue, The Dukes also works directly with artists and the local community, stimulating opportunities for creative engagement as a hub where people of all ages can discover their own creativity. The Dukes’ hold inclusivity at the centre of all it does, both on and off stage, so people from all walks of life can enjoy the benefits of creativity.

As a home for artists to create and connect, as well as a top class entertainment venue, The Dukes reaches beyond its boundaries by working closely with both the wider community and artists alike to put arts and culture at the heart of the Lancaster City region.
