In this issue of Community Update, we are pleased to award Out Of The Ordinary for its Commitment to Excellence.
Out Of The Ordinary is a shop with a difference. Originally opened in 2017 by Jane Ord in Skipton, North Yorkshire, the shop was born from a desire to provide an outlet for crafters who sold their items at craft fairs once a month. With opening the shop, Jane created a place for these makers to showcase their bespoke, handmade products, 7 days a week.
Today Out Of The Ordinary is owned by Nicola, a former part-time member of the shop’s team who bought the store in 2021 and relocated to Skipton’s prominent Swadford High Street. Since then the business has gone from strength to strength, increasing its online presence and working with over 50 crafters, supporting their artisanal crafts.
The shop stocks a huge variety of different items. From sculpture to jewelry, Out Of The Ordinary’s selection is made even more special by the unique nature of its suppliers. Nicola told us how she decides which artisans’ work to feature in the shop,
“We try not to duplicate what another crafter is selling, so that everyone has a chance to sell in the shop. A lot of the products have the ‘wow’ factor and by that I mean me saying “Wow! Has someone made that?!” People are so talented and sometimes don’t believe in themselves or what they make, but I do and selling their items makes me smile knowing I’m helping them to grow their own little business.”
This dedication to showcasing the best handcrafted pieces is paying off for Out Of The Ordinary, winning it the Best Craft & Gift Shop in 2024 at the English Independent Retail Awards, and receiving a special recognition award from the Skipton Business Awards.
“We just want to keep growing and get Out Of The Ordinary to as many people as we can.” Nicola told us. “As we showcase the best of our talented artisans ‘ bespoke, handmade crafts and bring them to the forefront of the high street. Simply put, everything is a unique piece, one of a kind and Out of the Ordinary!”
