In this issue of Community Update we are pleased to feature Dark Tales of York for its Commitment to Excellence in providing educational and thrilling days out.
Let us invite you into the world of Dark Tales of York, offering a thrilling walking tour through York’s historic streets. Focusing on its haunted history and macabre stories, the tour is led by costumed guides and delves into the city’s dark past, sharing tales of ghosts, executions, and eerie occurrences.
It’s a great day out for those interested in history, the supernatural, and experiencing York from a unique perspective! We spoke to Nigel Walker, Tour Guide who told us more about what to expect from each tour.
“Each tour is fully customisable, tailored to the specific needs of different groups, including start times and pickup locations. Whether
your group has a keen interest in grisly historical events or is more drawn to the paranormal, I adjust the content accordingly. My aim is to tell stories in a relatable way, humanising historical figures to make the tales more impactful. Additionally, we frequently update the tours to ensure a fresh experience every time.”
Nigel’s tours are well-known for his engaging storytelling and atmospheric settings making them both educational and entertaining, delivering an ideal experience for visitors seeking a blend of history and spooky fun.
We asked Nigel what has been the most memorable or surprising reaction from a tour participant.
“One tour, I was on Mad Alice Lane, telling her story when the light suddenly went out. The
group screamed. The timing was perfect!”
We also asked Nigel how he blends historical accuracy with theatrical story telling.
He answered: “I’ve studied history and I like to bring historical accuracy to the stories. However, it is a ghost tour and people don’t want dry facts they want a story, so I try to strike a balance between the two.”
Each tour lasts roughly 90 minutes where you’ll follow your guide down the old streets and narrow alleyways of old York and hear tales of ghosts, executions and murder. The price of the tour is £48.00 per group (up to 20 people), which is a small price to pay to walk in the footsteps of history and discover the ghosts of the past.
