In this issue of Community Update, we are delighted to award McKenzie’s Biscuits with our Commitment to Excellence Award.
McKenzie’s Biscuits is not just an award-winning bakery and biscuit business, it pays homage to treasured family recipes, passed down from father to son. In 1952 Alexander McKenzie opened an artisan bakery in Turriff, in rural Aberdeenshire. His son, Gerry went off to university, training to be a Physics teacher but soon fell under the spell of the family bakery, returning to learn the McKenzie delicious recipes and later established McKenzie’s Biscuits.
Gerry delivered biscuits to delighted customers in his trusted van, offering a charming personal touch. The range soon diversified from sweet to savoury, and as the business flourished, the industry started taking notice. In 2014, three of the products won The Great Taste Awards, followed in 2018 with two highly prestigious gold wins for the Scottish oatcake range from The Annual Guild of Fine Food. McKenzie’s Biscuits joined Aldi’s new exclusive Scottish range in 2021, showcasing its moreish Scottish savoury plain and rosemary biscuits.
This family-owned independent shop and bakery is the second oldest business in Cuminestown, popular with locals and biscuit lovers everywhere. We grabbed a cuppa and had a cosy chat with owner Gerry McKenzie,
“We bake a wide assortment of biscuits from our crunch cookie range, luxury Scottish biscuits, to our award-winning traditional Scottish oatcakes and savoury biscuits. The oatcakes are perfect with a cheeseboard, smoked salmon, even a spot of Arbroath pâté. Our oats are locally sourced from a nearby mill, showing our commitment to traditional, sustainable baking. Oatcakes have been a staple in Scotland for centuries and are now popular all around the UK, and even further afield.”
The Scottish savoury biscuits are perfect for bespoke Christmas hampers and the crunch cookie range are ideal as a treat for the biscuit-lover in your life. The Stem ginger and Scottish ginger perkin contain family recipes, lovingly passed on by Alexander McKenzie. The nut & spice biscuit variety contains vine fruits, ground hazelnut, nutmeg and cinnamon: moreish and wholesome.
