Christmas at the railway

In our Great Days Out section, we are delighted to showcase Nene Valley Railway with our Commitment to Excellence Award.

Nene Valley Railway, based at Wansford Station, is the UK’s premier international steam attraction, with routes extending through Overton (for Ferry Meadows), Orton Mere, Yarwell Junction, and Peterborough.

As a living heritage railway, lovingly maintained by dedicated volunteers, it serves as both a vibrant historical site and a year-round destination for visitors. Guests can enjoy the unique experience of riding an authentic steam train, delve into the rich history of the railway, and take in the scenic beauty of the Nene Valley area.

As a registered charity, Nene Valley Railway relies heavily on the public and volunteers to keep it going. Back in May 2024, the charity launched a Back on Track Appeal to raise £300,000 to refill the hole in its reserves following COVID-19. We spoke to Chris O’Regan, Commercial Manager who explained more.

“So far, we have raised over £65,000, which is a great start, but still very much short of the target. We are not in any immediate danger of closing, but without refilling these reserves, should we face another pandemic like closure or a severe maintenance issue, we may not have the funds needed to keep going, which is why this appeal is so important.”

Following this news, NVR has an amazing event happening with Christmas around the corner that you can contribute towards and join in.

Its brand-new experience ‘Christmas at the Railway: The North Pole Adventure’ begins on the 30th November to the 24th December 2024. Featuring characters provided by Darling Princess Parties, get ready to venture into the Enchanted Forest with Bramble to check if you’ve made the good list. Guided by Frostine, the winter fairy, you will embark on a magical journey to the North Pole, where you’ll assist Santa’s elves in preparing for the big day at Father Christmas’s Workshop! Guests will also have the chance to meet Santa and Mrs Claus before boarding the festive carriages where they’ll be transported in the most magnificent way back home.

Visitors can also see the Garden Railway, Model Railway, Miniature Railway, Museum and vintage locomotives and carriages around the yard, and there is also a book shop, gift shop and café.
