Family-run care company offers leading person-centred care

Community Update would like to award Ashmere Derbyshire with our Commitment to Excellence Award.

Ashmere Derbyshire is a family-run business providing high-quality care across Heanor, Ripley, Codnor, Smalley, West Hallam and Matlock in Derbyshire. The seven care homes offer the full care spectrum from residential, nursing, dementia, end-of-life, independent living to day care. At Woodside, within Heanor Park there is a specialised 12 bed household supporting adults with hearing impairments, with staff fully trained with British sign language (BSL) on hand.

Making the right decision for care can be difficult for families, with natural worries around loss of freedom or concern over sufficient stimulating activities. We caught up with Phoebe Booth: Ashmere Media and Community Relations Manager to find out more,

“Our ethos is that we are here for everyone, from our residents right through to the families too. Finding care can be challenging, many people feel like freedom gets taken away when moving into a care home however we would say it’s the opposite, having access to our facilities and our wonderful staff allows our residents to regain freedom.

We recognise that people all have different care needs and lifestyle choices, that’s why we make time to plan specific care for the individual. We also recognise how important it is for people not to be separated from their pets that’s why all our homes are pet friendly.”

Ashmere is busy introducing a new electronic care plan system, to allow staff to spend less time on paperwork and more time prioritising wellbeing, through activities and spending quality time with residents. Person-centred care is the linchpin of Ashmere’s carer philosophy: getting to know the quirks and humour of everyone, listening to life stories from courting in the 1950’s, to fashion choices in the swinging’ 60’s! Providing companionship and a listening ear is a core quality of all the caring staff. Residents are invited to feel like they belong to a loving community, where everyone is included and valued, Phoebe elaborates further,

“We take great pride in knowing that our care homes and care teams will make such a positive impact on our residents’ lives. We never take what we do for granted and are always looking for ways in which we can improve the experience for our residents and also the care provided by our excellent care team. We strive to go the extra mile for every resident and recently were able to take a 97-year-old resident on her first ever flight as this was an end-of -life wish of hers.”
