In this issue of Great Days Out, we’re delighted to showcase Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club with our Commitment to Excellence Award.
Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club is nestled in the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands, 14 miles north of Aviemore. The golf course boasts five-star glowing Tripadvisor reviews for its panoramic views, tiered golf course, warm, welcoming staff and infamous bacon rolls.
Established in 1890 by Willie Park Jr and James Braid, the golf club has a 300-strong private membership and prides itself on offering unbeatable holiday resort golf.
“Our 18-hole golf course offers a round of golf for every level of golfer but with a difference. The stunning Highlands views offer the perfect backdrop throughout the year but there is something particularly beautiful about the blooming purple heather in early through to late summer. The days are longer in summer of course and our golf course is popular with holidaymakers exploring the Cairngorms, following whisky trails along the river Spey or enjoying a spot of fishing.
We can offer group bookings, including families with children who regularly play golf, through to larger group golf bespoke packages including a buffet or three-course meal,” explained Lewis Ware: Golf Professional and Club Manager.
The course is spilt into three sections: the first six holes offering an easy flat start, with the remaining holes proving more challenging. The 16th hole is affectionately known by local members as a ‘Wee Dunt’- requiring a little swing 130- yards downhill and the short par-4 ninth: Murdies View offers one of the best views on the course.
Holiday golfers have compared the middle section to a ‘mini-Gleneagles’ and commented on the how the “Fairways and greens are kept in top condition and played very well, with good paths and great bunkers.” One TripAdvisor reviewer eloquently noted, “a glance to the hills feeds the soul.”
The high season is May to September, with a weekday and weekend round costing approximately £49* and in April and October (shoulder months) the price comes down to £39. For those visiting in low season, a round comes in at just £25.
“Throughout the year we host Visitors’ Weeks, with open competitions for non-members. On Saturday 20th July, we have the Gentlemen’s Millar Trophy- 18 holes (white tees)- at £27 per person and on Sunday 11th August, the 4-man Open Texas Scramble- (white tees) at £50 per team. All are welcome”
Lewis offers individual golf coaching from beginner to advanced, with lessons lasting 45 minutes and priced at £35, for those looking to improve their techniques.
