The Friendly markets with lots to see and do

At Community Update, we take pride in showcasing the very best community events that provide a wealth of benefits for the town and community. As such, in this issue we are pleased to announce that we have selected Oswestry Market as the recipient of our Commitment to Excellence Award.

Situated very near to the Welsh border, the beautiful town of Oswestry has been hosting weekly markets for hundreds of years, and these markets have been a major part of the trading and historical importance of the town’s history. The first known Charter was granted during the reign of Henry II when the Town was known as Whiteminster, and in 1262 a Charter was granted by John FitzAlan, Lord of the Manor To our Burgesses of our village of Oswaldestree.

The Wednesday and Saturday outdoor street markets create a wide-ranging balance of traders with hustle and bustle, colour and excitement to interest visitors and shoppers alike and Oswestry also boasts an excellent Artisan Market held on the last Friday of every month which sells the best in local produce such as pies and pastries, meat and fish all at the highest quality.

There is also an indoor market open every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, which boasts over 40 independent traders with plenty of coffee shops, food stalls and bespoke retailers, selling everything from fresh cakes and bread to antiques and gifts. Retail Markets & Events Manager David Clough told us, “There are a number of interesting food outlets where you can sit and enjoy the market atmosphere, and the best thing about the markets is that there is something for everybody to enjoy as it is vastly different from the stale and routine trip to the local supermarket; we are also very dog-friendly, and we are sure that you won’t be disappointed.”

Both the indoor and outdoor market boast retailers from every sector with more than 40 different traders, including Fishmongers, German Deli, vinyl specialist, Guitar repairs, haberdashery, partyware, bridal and ladies’ fashion. Some of these traders are fairly new, but many are well-established at the market, and all know their products inside out and can give advice and recommendations as required.

Oswestry Market also enjoys an enviable reputation for regular events and festivals throughout the year, such as continental and antiques markets, music festivals, fun days and obviously lots of fun around Christmas time. The recent Apple Day, held on October 8th championed local produce, healthy eating, community, home growing and the mighty apple, and November sees the traditional Halloween event, which will include free facepainting, Halloween costumes, free scary hunt, story-telling and a magician – all taking place on the 29th October.

A fantastic day out is in store if you visit this eclectic, independent historic market town and its food stalls, craft stalls and coffee shops.
