The thrill of water sports on beautiful Scottish rivers

Outdoor Pursuits Scotland was established 23 years ago and runs a wide range of fun activities from white water rafting, river tubing, river boogieboarding, paddlesports, funyaking, canyoning and gorge walking.

Located in Glasgow’s North East at Canal Bank Street, the sessions run from a variety of venues, including the Pinkston Watersports Centre. Commissioned as an official flagship Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014 legacy project, it is the first and only artificial Scottish whitewater course. With handy changing rooms and showers on-site, this is a perfect all-year round venue.

For those seeking more adventurous grade 2/3 white-water rafting, the River Tay in Stanley, Perthshire has multiple old broken weirs, with classic meandering rivers. Outdoor Pursuits Scotland has experienced instructors who will supervise sessions in six or eight-man inflatable rafts, for the wild ride of your life! The River Tay is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), brimming with Atlantic salmon, sea and river lamprey fish and otters, providing you with breath-taking wildlife scenery whilst you have your white-knuckle rides!

North of Glasgow, the River Garry Invergarry provides world-class white-water adventures for those looking for more challenging grade 3/ 4 rapids. Rafters need to use precise manoeuvring, for these more irregular waves and large falls at steeper gradients.

We caught up with Manager, Phil Robinson to find out more,

“Our adventurous activities are accessible at any age or level. We welcome everybody: individuals, group bookings, hen/stag events to outdoor instructor first aid and water safety courses.

We run Winter walking skills courses and Backcountry ski courses, during the winter months.

We are looking to push our white-water tubing a bit more, in addition to Pinkston, we may take this onto the natural river.

We will be up North at The River Garry near Fort Augustus more, on the awesome Grade 3 section of river.”

Such beautiful natural surroundings are a perfect antidote to our increasingly stressful lives and with the famous Scottish banter and comradery from friends and colleagues, what’s not to love about outdoor pursuits? Manager Phil considers himself lucky to have the perfect job,

“Best thing about my job is sharing the passion for the outdoors, taking people into amazing parts of Scotland and sometimes helping them stretch themselves into achieving things that they may have thought they couldn’t do.

We get great feedback from our stag and hen groups, I think they appreciate that we are a bit laid-back, showing a bit of banter but at the same time ensuring that safety is paramount, we also try and be flexible to the groups time frames and schedules.”
