Award-winning village pub with big heart

The Ship Inn in village Uphill, Weston-Super-Mare in Somerset has won an astonishing three awards recently, including Weston Mercury’s Pub of the Year 2023. The award-winning grade-I listed pub is the oldest pub in Weston-Super-Ware and is a firm favourite amongst locals for its large screen TVs for sporting fixtures, skittle alley, pool table, dart board, 46-seated restaurant and beers on tap.

With the colder weather here to stay, the pub has hearty, comfort food on the menu and three welcoming fires to keep warm. The pre-bookable festive Christmas menu is available from the 1st – 24th December, with all the usual trimmings. It has favourites like traditional turkey and Christmas pudding and vegetarian options such as breaded brie wedges and cranberry compote and butternut squash and goat’s cheese tart. Prices start at £25 for two-courses and £30 for three courses and customers are advised to book early, to avoid disappointment.

With the rising cost-of living, many customers have been struggling and the pub has boosted community spirit by keeping food and drink prices as low as possible. During January and February, often the bleakest, coldest months, landlords Sharon and Martin Harris and the team provide fresh soup every day for anyone in need from 3pm-5pm, freshly prepared from the pub allotment.

The family and dog-friendly pub has run by Sharon and Martin Harris for the last five and a half years and during COVID, took the opportunity to renovate the outside garden into a tabled beer garden, bar area, stage, allotment and even install four honeybee hives.

Now, post-COVID, the weekly pub quizzes have drawn regulars back into the pub, alongside pool tournaments and the skittle teams.

We spoke to owner, Candice to find out about plans for next summer,

“As soon as it’s warm enough, our Al Fresco kitchen for the beer garden will be open for business, serving delicious street food, nachos and sharing dishes.

On the 15th June is our Target Ovarian Cancer all-day summer festival, named ‘Net-Feest,’ after my mum, Jeanette who sadly died of the cancer. We are aiming to raise £20,000 for the charity and will be selling tickets, priced £10 each from February. We have lots of exciting local bands booked already, already one who has come out of retirement especially!

We have already raised £4,000 from a pool match between The Old Kings Head and the Ship Inn and feel confident, with the community’s support that we will reach our target!”
