In this issue of Community Update, we are awarding Focus on the Past with our Commitment to Excellence Award, for offering a truly exceptional retail and collector’s experience in the refined and eclectic world of antiques.
Cosmopolitan Clifton Village, Bristol is home to independent shops, eclectic boutiques and bustling cafés, overlooked by beautiful Georgian-period architecture. Nearby is the landmark Clifton Suspension Bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the early 19th century. Nestled in the heart of the village is Focus on the Past: a fabulous antiques emporium.
Focus on the Past is truly an Aladdin’s Cave: brimming with antiques furniture and advertising signs, collectable items, retro rotary 1970’s telephones and cool kitchenalia from 15 unique antique dealers. It’s the perfect place to shop local for unusual interior furnishings: from quirky to kitsch. We caught up with proprietor, Alison Roylance to hear more about the shop’s history,
“The original site many years ago was Woolworths, which then became an indoor bazaar incorporating Antiques in Focus which subsequently became Focus on the Past: an Antique Centre in its own right.
I’ve been the proprietor since the mid-1990’s, with my daughter, Tammy who now co-shares the current lease.”
For lovers of art history, vintage costume jewellery, silver ware, through to Persian rugs, there is something for every taste, whether extravagant, or rustic simplicity. Antique items dating back over 100 years, may include mid-century and older antique kitchenalia such as: brass hanging scales, original Waterford Crystal or wooden milking stools. Retro items, encompassing classics such as neon roller skates, original vinyl, cassettes and those iconic, unforgettable 1980’s gigantic mobile phones are always popular. Whether you want to decorate your interiors with Art deco clocks, Bauhaus chairs or add to your own unique collection, Alison and her team have a treasure trove of items to explore.
Focus on the Past is a favourite among local shoppers in Clifton Village, as well as attracting serious antique collectors from all over the country. If you’re looking for an unusual gift for the retro-lover in your life, are looking to add to your antique collection or simply want to browse in this beautiful shop, Alison and her team are happy to welcome you.
